This ball originates directly from the collection of Dick Cecil (1935-2023), a former Atlanta sports executive who helped bring the Braves to Atlanta and was the president of the Atlanta Chiefs soccer team. Cecil's accomplishments in the sports industry were significant: an early supporter of racial equality in sports, he desegregated the Braves' minor league spring training. Cecil also helped his close friend Hank Aaron by sorting through his heavy volume of mail when Aaron was close to breaking Babe Ruth's home run record, thus ensuring that the distracting hate mail was kept away. Cecil went so far as to forward the most threatening of the communications to the FBI. He later founded his own leisure and entertainment consulting company and created, among other memorable events, the National Old Timers Baseball Classic for the Borden Company, bringing former MLB players together for an exhibition game that benefited retired players in financial need. It was at one of these events that Cecil received the signed ball.
