BERNHARD RUST (1883 - 1945) Nazi Minister of Science, Education and National Culture. His philosophy was that the entire purpose of education ‘is to create Nazis'. Committed suicide at war's end. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, ‘Fuhrer Headquarters', July 12, 1943, the ornate appointment of '...Full Professor FULL Dr. Theodor Mayer to be President of the Reich Institute for Older German History (Monumenta Germaniae Historica)...' Hitler's lithographed signature appears at bottom, Rust has hand-signed at lower-right. This was a high-placed promotion in the prestigious historical research association. THEODOR MAYER (1883-1972) remained in his new position until the end of the war. His timely evacuation of the Monumenta Library from Berlin to Pommersfelden in Bavaria during the Second World War laid the foundation for the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH) to re-establish itself in Munich. The collapse of the Nazi regime meant the end of Mayer's academic career and the loss of his MGH presidency. In the post-war period, he fought for years in vain to be reinstated as president.
