Lot description
William Congreve (1670-1729, British playwright, poet and politician) autograph receipt for 125 pounds from Thomas Snow and John Paltock, which they received "of Paunceford Miller ye 14 Aug. last for my use." Dated October 14, 1723. Ink on laid, 8" x 3.25". As well as earnings from his writings, Congreve held various government posts which culminated in a lucrative position as Secretary of Jamaica, and the present may have been part of his salary or expenses. The rear is stamped with a "Bishopmark," an early postmark which showed the day and month of posting (the present is stamped "14" over "OC.") Autographs by Congreve are quite uncommon. We note that this same document appeared at auction 40 years ago at Sotheby's, on January 1, 1984. From their catalogue: "The Bishopmark on the verso presumably indicates that the receipt was part of a letter from Snow and Paltock. Autograph material by Congreve is rare."
