Raised sails in the harbour, signed 'G Langeweg' (lower right), oil on canvas, 81x95 cm, Provenance:-Collection Dirk Scheringa.-Auction, Christie's, Amsterdam, 7 March 2000, lot 552, where acquired by the present owner, Painted in 1952.In the 1950s, Langeweg became a member of ‘Vrij Beelden’, an artists' collective led by Willy Boers. This group aimed to transcend the constraints of Magic Realism, embracing their own experiments and imaginative expressions. Langeweg's paintings from this era de-emphasise precision and depth, showcasing nearly abstract compositions that are bold and dynamic.
