Lot description
Signed and dated on the rock to the right of Diana: ACuylenborch f. 1645 Although Diana and her companions are shown in the foreground of this painting, the Utrecht painter A. van Cuylenborch has also depicted Actaeon's transformation into a deer, a theme taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Inconspicuously placed on the left edge of the painting, we see Actaeon fleeing from his own hounds, with antlers already growing out of his head. The unfortunate hunter surprised the goddess Diana while she was bathing and was turned into a deer as punishment. The painting is listed in the RKD database as the artist's own work under number 295414.
