Signed lower right: A. Riedel in Rom Immediately after completing his studies at the Munich Academy, August Riedel moved to Italy in 1828, which he did not leave again after 1832, with the exception of a few study trips to Germany, France and Belgium. Rome, where our painting was created, became his real home and young Roman women his favourite subject. The present painting was apparently not previously known. It may be identified with the painting ‘Bathing Girls’ (no. 9) mentioned by Boetticher, as the other paintings with this subject are explicitly ‘Two Bathers’. Riedel´s works are characterised by the sunny, southern light, the fine flesh tones of his young models and the fresh green of the surrounding vegetation.
