Monogrammed and dated lower centre: 1595 / LVV This small-format picture of the Paradise bears the monogram of the painter Lucas van Valckenborch and is dated 1595. It is not included in Alexander Wied's catalogue raisonné. From our point of view, it is undoubtedly a work from this period, there is, however, no confirmation that it is a painting by this great landscape artist. If it is indeed a work by Valckenborch, it would have been painted in Frankfurt shortly before his death. The painter had been granted citizenship there in 1594 and died there in 1597 at the age of 62.
