Lot description

"Jockey & Groom After" by John Willis Good This bronze sculpture, titled "Jockey & Groom After," by John Willis Good, depicts a jockey mounted on a horse, with a groom standing beside the horse, holding the reins. The figures are detailed and realistic, capturing the essence of equestrian life. The artist signed the piece on the base. John Willis Good (1845-1879) was a British sculptor celebrated for his detailed and lifelike bronze sculptures, particularly those depicting equestrian subjects. Born in London, Good showed an early talent for art and sculpture. He studied under Joseph Edgar Boehm, a prominent sculptor of the time, which greatly influenced his work. Good's sculptures often featured horses, jockeys, and hunting scenes, capturing the dynamic movement and intricate details of his subjects. Despite his relatively short career, Good's work gained significant recognition and was highly sought after by collectors. His ability to convey the grace and power of horses, combined with his attention to detail, made his sculptures stand out. Unfortunately, Good's life was cut short at the age of 34, but his legacy lives on through his exquisite bronze works, which continue to be admired and collected to this day. It measures 12 1/2" by 14 1/2" by 4 1/2".
