Lot description

KURT COBAIN - Kurt Cobain's Handwritten Music Video Requests Letter - A letter handwritten by Kurt Cobain, the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the iconic 90s grunge band Nirvana, requesting archival footage for a music video. Handwritten in black ink on a piece of white paper, the letter lists several pieces of footage, most notably an interview in Ghent, Belgium, with Cobain referencing a gig they played there where he and bassist Krist Novoselic smashed guitars, resulting in a fragmented piece knocking an audience member's tooth out. Other footage includes an interview with Japanese music channel Space Shower TV and what Cobain refers to as a "cheesy TV commercial" by Arts Institutes International, which involved an "ultra sexy metal band" named Raquel singing "Pop Goes the Music". Nirvana initially used the latter footage for the opening shots in the music video for their song About a Girl. Raquel subsequently sued them for copyright infringement. The lot is accompanied by a Roger Epperson Authentication Ltd. certificate of authenticity. Dimensions (letter): 27.75 cm x 18.25 cm (11" x 7.25") Additional Provenance: Lot 431, Julien's Icons & Idols - Rock "n" Roll Auction on 4 November 2017 The handwriting in this lot has been professionally authenticated by expert Garry King; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.
