Lot description

CHRIS VAN ALLSBURG (AMERICAN, B.1949) ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION, pencil / graphite on paper, an eerie and evocative scene of a child's hat and key on the ground before a stout iron gate and brick wall, titled "Abduction" on card verso, signed and dated in pencil lower right. Housed in a modern frame. Dated 1976. 21" x 16 1/2" image, 36 3/4" x 26 1/4" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in East Lansing, Michigan, Chris Van Allsburg (b.1949), studied at the University of Michigan and the Rhode Island School of Design. After initially starting his career as a sculptor, Van Allsburg soon shifted to illustration work, specifically children's illustrations. He soon found success and was awarded the Caldecott Medal for Jumanji (1981) and The Polar Express (1985), both of which were eventually made into highly successful movies. The present drawing is an early example of his work, which is full of narrative detail and imbued with a dark palette.
