Lot description
Derrick Greaves, British 1927-2022 - Couple in Bed, 1972-78; charcoal on paper, signed lower right 'Derrick Greaves', also signed, titled and dated on the reverse of the frame 'Derrick Greaves Couple in Bed 1972/8', 69 x 101 cm (ARR) Note: the present work was made at an important time for the artist, following his acclaimed exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1973 and commercial exhibitions at Monica Kinley Gallery in London in 1973 and 1975. In an article by Mark Glazebrook (director of the Whitechapel 1969-72) written in 1967 he compared Greaves's work to Patrick Caulfield, Roy Lichenstein and Fernard Leger, emphasising the impact of Pop art on his work and in particularly the clarity of the work, avoiding any sense of expressive brushstroke. Greaves's cool approach in works from this time offer an interesting subversion of the traditions of desire and eroticism in Western painting.
