Lot description

Herman Jean Joseph Richir,  Belgian 1866-1942-  Study of a lady, bust-length, looking down and adjusting her hair;  black and white chalk on paper, signed 'Herman Richir' (lower right), 44.5 x 31.2 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present work is a typical example of Richir's contemplative and atmospheric figure studies, typically depicting individual women deep in thought. Richir enjoyed significant success as a portraitist in his time, completing commissions for King Albert I of Belgium (1875-1934) and his wife, Queen Elisabeth (1876-1965).
