Lot description

Jean Ferdinand Chaigneau, French 1830-1906- Landscape with a shepherdess and her dog herding a flock of sheep; oil on board, signed 'F Chaigneau' (lower left), bears label for the framer 'A. Lommertz, Paris' verso and a further indistinct stamp for ... Lanson [?], 24.2 x 35.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Chaigneau was closely associated with the Barbizon school of artists, living and working in that town throughout his career. The present work is absolutely typical of the artist, who regularly returned to the subject of shepherds in idyllic pastoral landscapes.
