Leendert de Koningh, Dutch 1777-1849- A shepherd watching his cattle on a riverbank; oil on panel, signed 'L de Koningh' (lower left, to the fence), 50.7 x 68.2 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is typical of De Koningh's distinctive compositions, which often feature cattle grazing strikingly close to a river bustling with sailing boats and fishing vessels. In this way, De Koningh merges the format of marine and pastoral landscapes, combining two genres that occupy such a central place in the Dutch artistic tradition.
