Lot description

Marmaduke Cradock (British, 1660-1717) A peacock, pheasant, cockerel, chickens and other birds in a landscape inscribed 'Col Maule' to the stretcher oil on canvas 61.5 x 74cm The painting is executed in oil on canvas which appears to be lined onto a coarse weave canvas support. The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are minor undulations across the surface. A small, horizontal tear in the upper half has been repaired and retouched, the overpaint has discoloured with age. There may be further overpaint present below the varnish which is difficult to distinguish. There is some dark staining in the sky. The varnish has yellowed with age but is even and semi-glossy.
