Lot description

KAY NIELSEN (1886-1957) The Nightingale. Unpublished illustration. Title from verso. Watercolor, gouache and graphite on paper. 14 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches, in 22 1/2 x 18 1/2-inch frame. Unsigned. Kay Nielsen's smooth, curving lines, elongated figures, and a flattened perspective made him a standout figure during the Golden Age of Illustration and the Art Nouveaux movement. This unpublished work bears an inscription of its title "The Nightingale," and may have had a connection to The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen, published in 1924. The intricate details and the interplay of light and shadow in Nielsen's illustrations complement Andersen's storytelling, enhancing the reader's immersion into these enchanting worlds.
