Lot description

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer, attribution for Rookwood Pottery Important Early Limoges style vase with foxes chasing flying geese USA, 1881 glazed and gilt earthenware 13.375 h x 8.5 dia in (34 x 22 cm) Incised manufacturer's mark and date to underside 'Rookwood 1881'. Provenance: Private Collection Catalog Note: Although not signed by the artist, we firmly believe this work was executed by Maria Longworth Nichols Storer. The decoration of foxes chasing flying geese shows a sense of humor and whimsy that Nichols often incorporated in her work. The fact that there were no other artists working for Rookwood in early 1881 as talented as Nichols also adds to the likelihood of it being her work. This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.
