Sight size: 23 1/4 X 14 1/2 in. Aldo Affortunati (1906-1991), was born in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and lived all his life in Florence. He started painting Tuscan landscapes as a youth, emulating the spirit and technique of the Macchiaioli, a group of 19th Century Florentine and Neapolitan painters who rebuked rule-bound Italian academies of art and turned to nature. Accordingly, he abandoned the paintbrush and took up the mestichino (small spatula) with which, by throwing the colors in masses onto the canvas without spreading them, he strove for greater brilliance. His works are included in collections in the United States, Brazil, Switzerland, France, Germany and Belgium, and his solo exhibitions in New York, Rome, Bologna, and Milan were lauded. This piece incorporates surrealist elements by inverting the beauty of natural and man-made objects, and their position against each other in the frame.
