Lot description

Jay Arnold (1890-?) American, Oil on Board. Signed lower right. Prior gallery information on back. Depicts a schooner and ketch under sail with small boats in the far distance. Overall size: 11 1/2 X 14 1/2 in. Sight size: 8 1/2 X 11 1/2 in. #1610 . Jay Arnold was born in Massachusetts in 1890. Known also as John Popeye Arnold and J. Arnold, he painted throughout the early 20th Century, concentrating first on whaling ships and later on yachts and clippers. Little is known about his life, although many of his works have appeared in auctions, and his style is looser than contemporaries like Montague Dawson but still captures the life and light of the sea in every stroke.
