Lot description
James Lee (Native American, Inuit, 20th century) ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A pair of statues carved from whale ear bones and walrus ivory - the naturally cupped and hollow ear bone is shell-like in shape and dense - making for an interesting material to work with! The artist used the natural bone contours to carve a whale under a crashing wave and mounted it on a carved slab of walrus ivory. The other statue has a whale below and an orca riding the wave, also mounted on ivory. Both carvings are signed "J. Lee" for Inuit artist James Lee, and the base of the orca whale statue is also marked "Alaska" on the base.
