Federico Beltrán Masses, Spanish 1885-1949 - La Tienta; oil on board, signed lower left 'F Beltram Masses' and with original artist label visible to the reverse, 21.8 x 26.2 cm Note: the 'tienta' was a test of the bull's spirit before they went into the ring. Having trained under Joaquín Sorolla, the artist was widely celebrated in Spain and France during his lifetime for his symbolist inspired work, seen here in the heightened use of colour. Traditional Spanish culture was at the center of his work, seen here in the intricacies of the training process for the bullfight.
