Albert Aublet (Paris,1851 - 1938) Bedouin at the window Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard 25 x 32 cm Signed and dated lower right Albert Aublet 1923 This painting very probably featured in the exhibition held by the artist from May 15 to June 15, 1923, at 135 bd Bineau in Neuilly, entitled soberly: "femmes, fleurs, enfants" ("women, flowers, children"). In this house, the painter had assembled "a veritable museum of Hispano-Moorish and Arab art, a complete sample of his career as an artist", reported the newspaper "Le Temps" on June 10, 1923. Trained in Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio, Aublet began exhibiting at the Salon in 1873. A brilliant painter, he won several awards in France and abroad, including a gold medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition. His first contact with the Orient came in 1881, during a trip to Constantinople. He traveled to Turkey, Algeria and Tunisia. The Orient thus inspired and strongly influenced his artistic production. During his stay in Tunis, he was appointed president of the Société des Artistes. In 1925, he took part in the Union Artistique d'Afrique du Nord in Algiers. The painter is said to have inspired the character of M. Biche in Marcel Proust's novel "A la recherche du temps perdu".
