JOHN HENRY MOHRMANN (BELGIAN, 1857-1916) - THE R. MACANDREW & CO. PASSENGER-CARGO SHIP 'ARIOSTO' OFF THE DOWNS OF DOVER JOHN HENRY MOHRMANN (BELGIAN, 1857-1916) The R. MacAndrew & Co. passenger-cargo ship ‘Ariosto’ off the Downs of Dover Signed ‘H. Mohrmann’ (lower right) 23¾ x 39¼in. (60 x 100cm.) Ariosto was a steamer of 2,920 tons built in 1887 by Russell & Co., Port Glasgow. On the 24th December 1899 she was bound for Hamburg loaded with cotton, corn, wheat and meal, when she stranded on Ocracoke Beach, North Carolina. Of her thirty crew, twenty-one abandoned the ship and took to the boats soon after she was stranded. The boats were wrecked in the heavy seas and all were drowned.
