Lot description

Emperor Maximilian II granting a crown to the coat of arms of Amsterdam; the emperor enthroned at center and holding a crown above an escutcheon with three crosses which is held by a female personification of Amsterdam, flanked by dignitaries. Signed in lower right: "CL M. Inv.". This is one from a series of plates showing the festivals and ceremonies given to Marie de Medici by the city of Amsterdam during her visit from 31 August to 5 September 1638. Engraved by Pieter Nolpe after the designs Nicolaes Moyaert, published by Blaeu in 1638 in Kaspar van Baerle's work on the festivities 'Medicea Hospes'. This is one of nine large engravings by Pieter Nolpe (Hollstein 95-103).
