FERDINAND (FRANZ, Archduke of Austria) Autograph letter signed ('Franz') to Rudiger, Baron Biegeleben in Cairo, in German, beginning with the usual pleasantries, glad the climate of Cairo is benefiting his health and mentioning the death of his son, going on to discuss the '...renewed struggle now with Hungary for unity... The army is still trying to completely wrest the power of the ruler!...' and internal politics ('...with the tearing up of the army, we will cease to be a great power...'), on the relationship with Germany ('... can now completely rely on Kaiser Wilhelm...'), and outlining hopes for the future ('...my ideal is not the current Triple Alliance but the old Three Emperors' Alliance and every effort should be made to restore this. I believe that this would also suit Kaiser Wilhelm very much, as, to my great joy, he is beginning to turn his back on Italy completely...'), commenting '...As always, England's behaviour is infamous. Our ambassador there is completely unsuitable in his position...', ending by hoping to meet him at the centenary celebrations in Tyrol; with autograph envelope (signature excised) bearing red wax seal, 6 pages on 3 bifolia, dust-staining, some small tears along folds, 8vo (203 x 127mm.), Vienna, 6 January 1909
