Jean Welz, Austrian/South African 1900-1975 - Still life with anemones and a vase, 1956; oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 'Jean Welz 1956', 39.5 x 50.4 cm (ARR) Provenance: private collection, USA, purchased from the artist in Cape Town and thence by descent Note: born in Austria, the artist emigrated to South African in the 1930s, where he would begin to exhibit in the 1940s. He was part of an imporant exhibition of South African art at the Tate in London in 1948, as well as the 'Van Riebeeck Tercentenary Exhibition' at the Venice Biennale in 1952 and the São Paulo Biennale in 1957.
