Lot description

(Italian, circa 1499-1546) The Resurrected Christ in Glory between the Virgin and St. John the Baptist with St. Mark, unsigned, oil on panel, 14 x 12 in.; Florentine gilt wood frame, 20-7/8 x 18-7/8 x 2 in. Provenance: The Estate of Dr. J. Clayton Davie and Family Note: St. Mark is seen on an inhabited island or coastal area. The Lion is an attribute of St. Mark but can also symbolize the Resurrection. Often the lion can appear to be asleep but with his eyes open, a symbol of watchfulness perhaps referencing the promised return of Christ. This lower have bears similarity to images of St. John on Patmos, a deserted island where he was exiled at the end of his life, receiving the Revelation
