At the time of his death, Declan Apuatimi, had been the most important artist from Bathurst Island for more than a decade. He achieved the distinction of being the first Tiwi artist to have a solo exhibition named "Declan," which toured across Australia after his passing in the late 1980s. Apuatimi showcased his artistic prowess through various mediums, including bark painting, canvas painting, spear-making, and sculpting, with the latter earning him considerable acclaim.
