The present work is an authors copy of Rolla, painted in 1878 based on the romantic novel of the same name by Alfred de Musset, the artists most famous work and an icon of late nineteenth century French art. Now located in the collection of the Musee des Beaux Arts de Bordeaux, Museum of Fine Arts of Bordeaux, France. Here Gervex faithfully reprises the detail and palette of the monumental original, with only very minor changes. Provenance: The original painting Rolla was sold at Sothebys, London, 19th Century European Paintings, 25 May 2016, lot 6. The painting illustrates one of the scenes of the romantic poem of the same name by Alfred de Musset 1833. Henri Gervex is known for Gentile figure, portrait, mythology, history painting. One of a kind artwork.
