Lot description
Théobald Chartran, French 1849-1907 Figure studies, including a lady with a fan, a man in cavalier's costume, and a terrier; pen and black ink on paper, signed 'Chartran' (lower right), stamped with studio stamp (lower right), bears label for 'Bruno et Patrick De BAYSER' attached to the frame verso, 31.5 x 45.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Chartran worked largely in the academic tradition, principally producing portraits and history scenes, no doubt influenced by his studies under Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). The present sketch provides a fascinating insight into the artist's process, depicting a wide variety of subjects, from a lady wearing what appears to be Spanish dress to a number of figures in top hats, a landscape scene with a rabbit emerging from its warren, and a blackbird which dips its beak tentatively into a glass of wine.
