Lot description
Joseph Delattre, French 1858-1912 An evening river landscape, with boats by the shore; oil on canvas laid down on board, signed 'Delattre' (lower left), 25.2 x 57.1 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Delattre is principally known as a Rouen School painter, a movement which he founded with contemporaries Charles Angrand (1854-1926), Léon-Jules Lemaître (1850-1905), and Charles Fréchon (1856-1929). He was heavily inspired by the approach of Claude Monet (1840-1926), who was his friend and one of the central proponents of the Impressionist movement. The present work is a stunning example of Delattre's style, with its simplified forms lending the work a striking geometric quality, while his loose brushstrokes and use of impasto convincingly evoke the texture of the water's surface.
