HENRY CARO-DELVAILLE (Bayonne, France, 1876-Paris, 1928). "Maternity". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Restored. Measurements: 145 x 123 cm; 182 x 158 cm (frame). In this oil on canvas Henry Caro-Delvaille offers us an intimate scene, resolved in a dark palette for the background and warm tones for the flesh tones and dresses, typical of realist art and also of the romantic tradition, fleeing from the chromatic coldness of the more classicist traditions. The tender image shows us a mother breastfeeding her child of a few months of age, who caresses her bejeweled hand oblivious to the viewer's gaze. The cradle wrapped in neat fabrics, the flowered hat resting next to the armchair, the subtle fabrics of the lady's dress adorned with red ribbons, or the vase ultimately tell us of the high lineage to which the young woman belongs. The light, sifted and vaporous, falls on faces and flesh, capturing the magic of these everyday moments. Henry Caro-Delvaille was trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bayonne and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a student of Léon Bonnat. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français in Paris in 1899. He won a third class medal in 1901 for his painting entitled "La manicure". In 1905, he won the gold medal at the International Exhibition in Munich. From 1917, he traveled to the United States, where he settled until 1925. There he painted numerous portraits, nudes, landscapes and decorative panels.
