Lot description

HENRY GEORGE GAWTHORN (1879-1941) FRASERBURGH / L.N.E.R. Circa 1930. 39 3/4x24 1/2 inches, 101x62 1/2 cm. The Dangerfield Printing Co., Ltd., London. Condition A-: minor creases and restoration at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds; minor offsetting in image; handwriting on verso, showing through at top. In many of his finest posters, Gawthorn, who studied architecture before he became a painter, employed his signature, stylized graphic ability to depict the privileged classes engaging in their exclusive and elegant pastimes. His Art Deco-inspired illustrations were largely executed using flat colors and no outlining, in a manner reminiscent of Ludwig Hohlwein and Fred Taylor. For this Scottish coastal town he depicts a strikingly fashionable beach scene. Furness Vol. 1, p. 87.
