Lot description

DE VIGNY, ALFRED Daphne. Paris: F.L. Schmied, 1924. One of 140 copies, this copy 117 signed by Schmied in pencil. Full brown morocco to an Art Deco design, signed "Pierre Legrain" on the lower front turn-in in gilt, the upper cover with a mosaic design with geometrical onlays in black, dark blue, gray and tan, decorated in gilt and palladium, the title at the foot of the cover in letters of onlaid white morocco; the spine lettered in gilt, with two bands of black extending across; the front cover design recapitulated in a simpler form on the rear cover; gold silk pastedowns and endsheets, marbled endpapers, housed in a leather-tipped slipcase to match. 11 3/4 x 9 5/8 inches (30 x 24.5 cm); 184 pp.; with 5 plates and 25 other designs printed in color wood-engraving by Pierre Bouchet after F.L. Schmied. Very light wear to the lower extremities of the rear board, the spine a trifle faded, but in all a very beautiful binding in an attractive state of preservation. The rear panel of the slipcase has an abrasion. Internally, some offsetting from the Schmied designs to the text, as is usually the case. Pierre-Émile Legrain was among the preeminent designers of the Art Deco era in France. His creations include the famous glass and copper Pleyela piano and a variety of furniture made with unusual and exotic materials. He is perhaps best known today for his extraordinary bookbindings. He bound several copies of Schmied's Daphne, and the design on the present example is exceptionally successful, an extraordinarily elegant presentation of Schmied's masterful edition of De Vigny. Nasti B5.
