Born in Istanbul, Saygi spent a significant amount of his life in Paris, depicting vibrant Paris street scenes, social life, cafes and public spaces. Rue anemeé (a Vibrant Street), is a great example of Mualla Saygi’'s expressive color pallet and figurative style, effected by French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism but preserving a distinctive Turkish identity. In 1939 Saygi made thirty works for the Turkish pavilion at the New York World's Fair. However, hist first exhibition opened only years later in Paris in 1954. Struggling at first to gain recognition and facing impactful personal challenges and struggles throughout his life, Saygi later became to be one of the most influential representatives of modern Turkish art of the 20th century, along with Abidin Dino. CONDITION Observed in frame under glass, the painting is in good condition, a 2.5 inch repaired tear along the right edge. No other visible issues to report. N.B.
