Gebler studied at the academies in Dresden and Munich and specialized in animal painting, especially the representation of sheep, which he studied in detail. He also depicted shepherd boys and shepherds several times in lovable scenes. From 1867 he successfully attended major national and international exhibitions and received medals in Berlin, London and Munich from 1874 to 1883.
