Lot description
Aharon Avni, Ukranian/Israeli 1906-1951 - Market scene; gouache and watercolour on paper, signed indistinctly lower right 'A Avni' and in Hebrew, 34.4 x 49.3 cm Provenance: private collection and thence by descent Note: the artist was one of an influential group of artists that developed a specifically Israeli language of modern painting in the 1930s and 40s, alongside Nachum Gutman and Shimshon Holzman. The colours and spontaneous handling of this work evoke the sound and feel of the market place. Avni was recently the subject of a retrospective exhibition at Herzliya Museum 'Aharon Avni: His Studio and Studia', curatored by Ron Bartos, which ran from 2021-22.
