Lot description
Harden Sidney Melville, British 1824-1894- Horses pulling a cart along the shoreline; oil on canvas, signed 'H S Melville' (lower left), 30.5 x 56 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Melville was celebrated for his images of rural life, featuring rustic figures who are generally accompanied by sturdy horses. Interestingly, he conducted the first official hydrographic survey of the north-east coast of Australia in 1842-1846 on board the H.M.S. Fly, which was under the command of Captain Francis Price Blackwood. In the present work, the artist's use of thick impasto effectively emphasises the geometric forms of the horses' flanks, and the covering of the cart.
