Hans von Marées, German 1837-1887- Figurenstudien; pencil heightened with touches of white on paper, with a pencil sketch of two figures verso, bears an old label inscribed in German by Julius Meier-Graefe on the mount verso, 37.8 x 29.5 cm. Provenance: with the German art critic and novelist Julius Meier-Graefe (1867-1935). with the German-born British art historian Alfred Scharf (1900-1965). Anon. sale, Sotheby's, Munich, 8 December 1998, lot 155. Private Collection, UK. Note: Von Marées started his career as a portrait painter, before shifting towards a Classical approach, with his depiction of mythological scenes placing him within the Idealist School of 19th-century Germany. His brand of Classicism is particularly distinctive, usually differentiated from the work of contemporaries such as Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880) and Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901) through his bold use of colour. The present drawing presents a fascinating insight into the artist's process, revealing his interest in the depiction of the human figure, in a variety of poses and from different angles. Indeed, the human body, nude or loosely clothed, is a subject to which he returned repeatedly over the course of his career.
