Lot description

ALDO CHAPARRO (Lima 1965–lives and works in Mexico City) CH November 2, 2015 17:00 PH. 2015. Stainless steel, electrostatic paint, pink. With the incised signature and date on the underside: CHAPARRO 15. 140 × 110 × 30 cm. With the confirmation of authenticity by the artist, Mexico City, April 2023. We thank his Studio for their kind assistance. Provenance: - Galerie Art & Public, Geneva. - Purchased from the above by the present owner, since then private collection Switzerland. The Mexican-Peruvian sculptor Aldo Chaparro creates unique sculptures in steel and transforms it into delicate folded forms using only his own body weight. The raw material of the present works is a sheet of steel, one red, one unfinished: a machine-made metal plate standardised for slenderness, perfection and a shiny reflective surface. The end product is a paper-like, crumpled object that has little in common with the original source material. Chaparro subjects the metal to a transformation, changing it from something seemingly austere and formal into a fragile, supple object, while still allowing the material the freedom to develop on its own. Although he uses his entire body weight as he leans on the plate and exerts force, the steel surfaces retain a certain autonomy as they determine their own folds and shapes. In this way, a wide variety of angles, reflections and plays of light are created by chance, which in the case of the present works is further accentuated by the colouring. These unique objects highlight Chaparro's ongoing relationship with the material and encourage the viewer to seek out what is as yet unseen within any of the folds. --------------- ALDO CHAPARRO (Lima 1965–lebt und arbeitet u.a. in Mexiko-Stadt) CH November 2, 2015 17:00 PH. 2015. Rostfreier Edelstahl, elektrostatische Farbe, pink. ---------------
