Lot description
GERMAN WAR ART BY HANS LISKA HANS LISKA (1907-1983) Austrian illustrator, drafted as a reporter and illustrator for the Wehrmacht Propaganda Troops, and renowned for his drawings of World War II battlefields as well as his later works for Mercedes-Benz. A first copy of his sketchbook ‘Hans Liska' (Carl Weimer, 1944), 68pp. oblong 4to., containing frontline scenes in both pencil and color from the Eastern Front, Greece, ground combat in Sevastopol, the aftermath of the British raid on Dieppe, engineers advancing in a machinegun-armed rowboat, flamethrowers in action, German railroad guns and armored trains, mechanized infantry, and much more. A fascinating, if idealized, view of the war through German eyes, with a level of humanity and emotion not often seen. Slight wear to covers and very slight foxing to a few pages, else very good.
