Charles Edouard Delort (French, 1841-1895) Friday Oil on canvas 22-1/2 x 32-1/2 inches (57.2 x 82.6 cm) Signed lower left: C. Delort Property from the Estate of Eugene Iglesias, Hollywood, California PROVENANCE: Haussner's Restaurant Collection, Baltimore, Maryland; Their sale: Sotheby's, New York, November 2, 1999, lot 112; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Haussner's Restaurant was a Baltimore landmark that owed its fame as much to its celebrated crab cakes as to the large collection of fine American and European nineteenth-century paintings which decorated its walls. Like many of the paintings purchased for the restaurant by owners William Henry Haussner and his wife Frances Wilke Haussner, this marvelous work by Charles Delort references food; a chef displays the splendid catch of the day to the cardinal before it is prepared for his evening meal. Over the course of 73 years, the Haussners acquired over 100 paintings, many of them derived from the distinguished estates of Henry Walters, Cornelius Vanderbilt and J. P. Morgan. HID01801242017
