Lev Timothy Mills 1938-2021 Celebration 1981 color screenprint on wove paper 28-1/2 x 22 inches signed and dated numbered, 2/100 Known primarily as a printmaker, Mills grew up in Florida, and studied at Florida A&M University. He earned his MA and MFA at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. At Wisconsin, he studied with Dean Meeker, an accomplished printmaker himself. Millsâ subjects approach a social narrative, but he likes to leave room for interpretation. He places precedence on artistic issues and this is evident in the high level of craftsmanship in his work. The images are bold, but subtleânot heavy-handed. Mills studied abroad at the Slade School of Art in London on a fellowship. He participated in exhibits throughout Africa with the United States Information Agency program. Mills returned to the U.S. to Atlanta, to teach printmaking at Clark College, and later Spelman College. In the late 1960s-70s, Millsâ work consisted primarily of intaglios and silkscreen prints. âI am greatly influenced by the discovery of new materials that might be used to produce a work of art. It is necessary to define these components that make art meaningful as new media are produced. The ongoing effort of a âstructuralistâ is to struggle with formsâto build up, modify, tear down, and build up again before the resolution of a given work finally does take place.â -Lev T. Mills
