Lot description
This work is unsigned, but its is stylistically and thematically recognisable as a work by the Berlin painter, who trained for four years in the studio of the court painter Antoine Pesne. The training that shaped Rode's style is just as noticeable in the present work as the unusual approach to the biblical subject. In keeping with the spirit of the Enlightenment, Rode's religious compositions are characterised by the fact that he is less interested in a religious exaltation of the pictorial motif than in a more mundane depiction of human activity.
