Lot description
Germain Théodule Clément Ribot, French 1845-1893- Still life with greengages, strawberries, and a coupe glass; oil on panel, signed 'Germain Ribot' (lower right), 17.6 x 25.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: We are grateful to Gabriel P. Weisberg for confirming the authenticity of this lot. Still life compositions were in high demand during the period in which Germain worked and were especially coveted by middle-class clientele searching for decorative paintings for their homes. This demand saw a revival of the carefully balanced and textured still life compositions of the likes of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) in the 18th century.
