Robert Gwelo Goodman, British / South African 1871-1939- On the Grand Canal, Venice; pencil and pastel on paper, signed 'R G Goodman' (lower left), 43.8 x 57 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 6 June 1996, lot 58. Private Collection, UK. Exhibited: London, Royal Institute Galleries, Piccadilly, no.3. Note: The present work is probably dateable to Goodman's visit to Venice in 1910. Here his confident use of pastel allows him to employ freely flowing lines, effectively conveying the fluctuations and energy of the Grand Canal.
