Lot description
Joseph Josiah Dodd, British 1809-1894- The West Front of Milan Cathedral; pen, ink, watercolour, and bodycolour over some etched line on paper, signed and titled 'West Front of Milan / Cathedral / Dodd Bangor N Wales' (lower right), signed with monogram 'JJD' (centre left), 64.3 x 102.5 cm. Note: Dodd produced a number of architectural watercolours of the magnificent façades and interiors of churches in Italy and Spain. The present work is highly detailed and complex, emphasising the intricate Gothic architecture of Milan Cathedral, with the pockets of dense staffage creating a sense of clamour and bustle. Dodd's use of bold pigments in the blue skies and vibrant awnings which cover the windows evokes the cheerful, bright sunlight of Milan.
