Four prints (of 79) from Lewis' Das Illustrirte Mississippithal...vom Wasserfalle zu St. Anthony an bis zum Golf von Mexico, considered by Colton Storm to be "one of the half-dozen great and rare illustrated works relating to North America". During the summers of 1846 and 1847, Lewis floated down the length of the Mississippi from the Falls of St. Anthony to New Orleans. A landscape painter from St. Louis, he documented the scenery, wildlife, and the lifeways of the Indians from Minnesota to New Orleans. The plates were drawn from his original sketches and published in 20 parts over 4 years.
