John White Alexander (American, 1856-1915) Portrait of John de Kay Pencil on laid paper 8-3/4 x 6-7/8 inches (22.2 x 17.5 cm) (sheet) Signed lower right: J.W. Alexander John White Alexander had a longstanding relationship with the Gilder/de Kay family. He executed a number of family members portraits, including one of Richard Watson Gilder that was painted in 1889 for the Fellowcraft Club in New York, and one of Dorothea Gilder that was painted between 1887 and 1891. Both paintings are listed in the John White Alexander memorial catalogue. There was also a relationship between the Palmer family and Alexander. Between 1887 and 1891, the artist painted a portrait of Mr. Cortland Palmer, as well as a portrait of the Palmer children. The present work is likely a portrait sketch executed during one of Alexanders many stays with the Gilder family. HID01801242017
