Lot description
Framed oil on canvas depicting Florida Highwaymen Landscape. Signed on lower right. Mary Ann Carroll was born in Georgia in 1940. As the only female Highwaymen painter, Mary Ann Carroll faced additional social and economic hurdles on her journey to become a professional artist. Pragmatically recalling her struggle to support her family while developing her artistic career, she said, I have never seen it as a mans world or a womans world. What I saw was survival. Like the other Highwaymen, a group of African American artists celebrated for their distinctive paintings of Floridas natural environment, Carroll sold her art from the trunk of her car, crossing the state in her Buick despite the potential for violence or discrimination. Of the Highwaymen, Carrolls landscapes are noteworthy for their vibrant colors and crisp details. Overall size: 13 1/4 x 15 1/4 in. Sight size: 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.
